travel is a privilege

Being able to travel is a privilege, and one that I think people, especially those within the online travel community, often forget. Instagram is plastered with the same posed photos of white girls in straw hats in 'insert travel location here' with the same 'insert travel quote here' captions. Quotes like "the world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page" or "we wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfilment", or some other half-baked sentiment. Essentially these types of captions suggest that one cannot be fulfilled or claim to have properly experienced life without travel, which is both untrue and uncritical. Now I do not for a second think that people who post these quotes have any insidious or deliberately hurtful incentives, more that people often use these captions in an offhand manner in order to gain followers, or add some 'depth' to their posts, without necessarily thinking of the repercussions of what the…
