How to get from Chiang Rai to Mae Salong by public transport

My motto, when traveling, is that (almost) anywhere can be reached by public transport and/or walking, however I found it difficult to find information on how to get from place to place in Thailand without going on a tour or using a taxi. One of the places that caused me particular difficulty in terms of how to get to and from was Chiang Rai to Mae Salong, so I thought I would share how I did it. In total the return journey cost me only 80 baht so I saved myself a tonne of money by going via public transport. 

Starting from Chiang Rai you first need to get to Mae Chan, a sleepy little town about 45 minutes to an hour away. In order to get there you must first head to the old bus station (Bus Terminal 1) in Chiang Rai and look for a green and white bus that is heading to Mae Sai.
